Frequently Asked Questions
Where does CNFA® send Volunteers and for how long?
CNFA sends Farmer-to-Farmer volunteers to Moldova and Georgia; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda; and Angola, Malawi and Mozambique. Volunteer assignments are generally 16-19 days in length.
What assignments need volunteers now?
New assignments are regularly posted on CNFA’s website. Please click here for a list of currently available assignments CNFA hopes to fill in the coming months.
Who is CNFA looking for to fill volunteer assignments?
Developing countries need assistance from all types of agribusiness professionals. CNFA seeks experienced volunteers from a variety of backgrounds including: farmers and ranchers, cooperative specialists, food processing professionals, agribusiness executives, extension agents, agricultural organization leaders, agricultural insurance and finance specialists, and others.
Is there any cost to participate in the program?
Volunteers donate only their time and unique skills. CNFA covers all logistical expenses. This includes airfare, lodging, meals, local transportation and other project-related costs. Volunteers should not have to pay any of their own money to do a CNFA assignment.
Can I bring my spouse along on an assignment?
CNFA does not allow spouses to travel with volunteers during their assignments. If at some point before or after the volunteer’s assignment the volunteer would like to meet up with his or her spouse, that is permitted.
Do we receive a per diem?
Volunteers are provided a cash advance that is calculated based on the actual costs of lodging, meals and other expenses for the country they are visiting. Volunteer cash advances include per diems for meals and incidental expenses.
How will I get there?
CNFA purchases economy class tickets for all volunteers from the airport of their choice to the country of their assignment. While CNFA makes every effort to accommodate volunteer preferences, we cannot always meet requests for specific flights, seats or other arrangements. CNFA does not purchase upgradeable tickets, tickets for any class other than economy or tickets for anyone who is not a CNFA volunteer. We ask that
volunteers not send CNFA itineraries generated on the internet. The seats that are available from web sites such as Orbitz or Travelocity do not come from the same pool of seats that are available to our travel agent and are frequently not in compliance with the Fly America Act.
Side trips to destinations other than your assignment country may be permitted if the assignment schedule allows. All arrangements and costs associated with such trips will be the responsibility of the volunteer.
Where will I stay?
The majority of volunteers will stay in either a regional hotel or a rented apartment.
What would I go there to accomplish?
Specific objectives and anticipated impacts are clearly outlined in the volunteer’s Scope of Work (SOW) and each volunteer is expected to achieve the majority of those results.
Do you have to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply?
