Georgian Entrepreneurs Expand Greenhouse Investment

The USAID-funded Georgian Economic Prosperity Initiative (EPI) is developing a number of heated greenhouses throughout the country. These greenhouses offer significant potential to make a difference in Georgia’s import-heavy vegetable sector. However, investment is required in order for these greenhouses to play a key role in the agricultural infrastructure of Georgia. Often banks and other investment firms are cautious about funding this type of project. To encourage increased commercial investment, EPI is working to communicate the business opportunity and potential return on investment of these greenhouses.

To begin this process, EPI conducted a greenhouse feasibility study. The positive results further proved the potential and opportunity to grow Georgia’s agricultural sector, and were presented at key stakeholder meetings. Attendees included 110 public and private agricultural sector personnel. These events communicated and showcased the value of investment and presented opportunities to finance these greenhouses.

Since EPI’s work began in Georgia, a variety of firms, banks, and private investors have shown a significant interest in developing greenhouses throughout the country. As of late 2011, new investments in greenhouses resulting from EPI's investment promotion activities total nearly $19 million.

EPI's greenhouse investment efforts will reduce vegetable imports, increase job opportunities, and benefit Georgia’s agricultural economy as a whole, through the establishment of sustainable, profitable agribusinesses.
