The John Ogonowski and Doug Bereuter Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) Program is authorized by the U.S. Farm Bill and managed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). F2F works to generate rapid, sustained economic growth in the agricultural sector through short-term technical assistance provided by U.S. volunteers and supported by highly trained local staff. A secondary goal of F2F is to increase the American public’s understanding of international development issues and programs, and international understanding of the United States and U.S. development programs.
CNFA is implementing F2F in the Southern Africa region, working in Malawi, Mozambique, and Angola. We rely on the expertise of U.S. volunteers from diverse backgrounds to respond to the needs of hosts. These hosts can be farms, processors, cooperatives, farmer associations, or other agricultural enterprises; they vary in size and commodity focus. Each volunteer assignment has distinct objective that are determined by the needs of the host organization.
Marie Chikuni has owned Marie and Associates since 2015. Ms. Chikuni produces chili sauce using a local variety of chili pepper called Kambuzi, which she sells both locally and internationally. Due to the success of her company, she is planning to construct a bigger processing factory in 2017.
Marie’s clients were reporting a loss of quality after 3 months and a change of color; the sauce changed from bright orange to light brown color. The host is requesting expertise through the F2F Program on how to improve shelf life and other quality issues. Through the volunteers’ assistance, Ms. Chikuni would like to ensure the hot sauce will remain fresh for at least 12 months unopened.
• Improved processing methodology and procedures to allow longer shelf life of the final product.
• Increase in total commodity sales.
· Extensive experience in food processing for mass markets, particularly in hot sauce.
· Experience and knowledge in food science and food preservation.
· Experience in managing or consulting processing companies.
· Prior experience working with small enterprises or agribusinesses in Africa strongly preferred.
· Must be citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
