STTA Assignment on Potato Production

CNFA

 

1        BACKGROUND:

 

CNFA aims to increase incomes and employment in rural areas by delivering firm-level investment and technical assistance to agribusiness enterprises that wish to engage with commercial markets as private businesses.

 

2        OBJECTIVES:

 

The objectives of this assignment are to:

§  Address, through a hands-on and principally field-based expert agronomist, the following aspects of potato production:

          Variety selection

          Fertility management

          Soil preparation and planting practices

          In-season activities such as IPM practices. Colorado Potato Beetle is a serious problem and control practices need revision

          Irrigation

          Vine killing

          Harvest techniques

          Post-harvest handling and storage facilities

§  Evaluate planting, harvesting and storage practices and recommend improvements

 

3        PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

§  Establish a baseline evaluation of the knowledge of the farmers and input suppliers

§  Assess the Value Chain and recommend interventions for improvements

§  Travel in the field with the program staff to meet with farmers, processors and input suppliers

§  Make in-field recommendations and prepare a summary report at the end of the assignment that suggests further steps to improve potato production in Caucasus region

 

4        DELIVERABLES:

 

§  Individual reports and recommendations for each of the USAID clients visited

§  Training material development, to be conducted in collaboration with the USAID Agribusiness Advisor

§  A final report that suggests next steps and possible future engagements to build upon this STTA assignment

 

 

5        MANDATORY AND DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

          Highly experienced farmer and potato consultant

          BS in agronomy with emphasis on potato production required. MS preferred
