STTA: Maize Value Chain Consultant

Project Background:


CNFA is seeking local or international candidates for a short-term consultancy to support a public-private program in northern Nigeria. The recently awarded USAID Feed-the-Future program will improve the supply chain of maize, reducing aflatoxin and other contaminants by working with farmers, supply chain intermediaries, and input providers.


Consultancy Summary:


The goal of this assignment is to provide support and leadership to immediately begin developing technical program activities upon program award. The consultant will work jointly with Nigerian and international technical specialists and the CNFA start-up team to meet early program deliverables as detailed below. This consultancy has an estimated level of effort of 40 days and will require travel to Kaduna State, Nigeria. The anticipated timing of the assignment is mid-June to mid-August 2017. 

Specific Tasks

  • Participate in program work planning sessions, providing technical expertise for working with smallholder farmers and other value chain players to reduce aflatoxin contamination in maize. 
  • Identify and review existing aflatoxin training materials from USAID, the program’s private sector partner, and other sources.
  • Develop aflatoxin training curriculum for lead farmers and develop plan for conducting lead farmer training of trainers. 
  • Conduct outreach and rapid training of maize aggregators and input suppliers using existing training materials through a stakeholder workshop.
  • Identify actionable recommended next steps.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience planning and implementing aflatoxin-related programming for maize with smallholder farmers required.
  • Experience developing training materials for use by smallholder farmers required.
  • Previous experience in Nigeria preferred.
  • English proficiency and excellent written communications skills.
